“I would completely support the George Floyd Act”. Markowitz is in favor of passing laws that would make police officers less likely to perform their duty as they would be more vulnerable to litigation. ♦ Markowitz stated during the 2020 Candidate forum: Yes, I would completely support the George Floyd Act. I think that when the nation saw a law enforcement officer, someone officers, someone who is sworn to protect and serve, kneel on the neck of an unarmed black man for eight minutes and 46 seconds, draining the life out of him that we saw that we need to have regulations in place, so this does not happen again, and so I would completely and wholeheartedly support the George Floyd legislation, and I would say that all officers need to be trained in de-escalation training. They need to have implicit bias training, so that we can get to the root cause of the systemic racism that is inherent within our criminal justice system, and so that we can tackle all of the issues related to race as it relates to police brutality. I think that eliminating chokeholds is a great step, and I think that when faced with nonviolent individuals, we should not be using violence on nonviolence. It is completely antithetical to everything that we believe in as a society that believes that an individual has the right to liberty and is innocent until proven guilty, and to take the life of someone because of the snap judgment of an uninformed officer is poor at best. ♦ The George Floyd Act was a 2021 Texas bill (HB 88) that failed to pass the legislature that aimed to limit “qualified immunity” for police officers.
